Battery operated TVs have really come of age since the invention of the LCD screen. Quite a few models are now on the market that will easily slip into your pocket. Even if you’re on the train or catching a bus you can watch your favorite TV shows. Camping is great for kids during the day but it’s a bit trickier to keep them entertained when the sun goes down. For remote places with no reception you could opt for a battery operated TV DVD player. No need to carry a bunch of DVD’s with you if you get a model that has an SD card and plays Divx files. You can easily convert your kid’s favorite DVD’s to Divx and fit quite a few hours of TV on a large capacity SD card. Make sure you include some movies for the grown ups as well.

When you are choosing a model that is right for you make sure you demo it in store before purchasing. Some cheaper LCD screens demonstrate what is known as motion blur. Most blur is caused by the pixels in the LCD screen not being able to change colors quickly enough for fast moving images. More expensive models will keep this phenomenon down to a minimum or eliminate it all together.

Also take note of the viewing angle. Viewing angle is the maximum angle you can view the TV from and still get a good picture. Portable battery operated TV’s are best viewed directly from the front so viewing angle is not the biggest deciding factor. Larger models that 2 or more people are going to be watching will need a fairly decent viewing angle. The most common LCD screen size in battery operated TV’s is the 7 inch model. This size represents a good price point as mass production brings the price down quite dramatically. Try to get the brightest screen possible for the best viewing in lit up areas or daylight viewing. The higher the resolution of the picture the better the picture quality will be.

Other things you might like to consider before making your purchase is the length of time between battery changes or charges. Most come with AC adapters for charging from mains but some don’t so you may need to consider purchasing a battery charger for the wall as well. Being able to charge it up in the car is handy as well so check to see if it comes with a 12 volt charger.

Miniaturisation of technology can also be life saving during times of natural disaster. Portable radios have been in every household emergency kit for many years now but now it’s possible to have a battery operated tv as well.

You’ll need a battery operated TV to receive the national emergency television broadcast. Make sure you get a model that runs on disposable batteries. It’s no good having one that runs on lithium when the battery goes flat and you have no mains power to recharge it.

You can now even take a portable satellite receiver system with you when you’re out camping or travelling. One system, the PocketDish fits in your pocket but it’s not really a satellite TV as it’s only capable of recording from the satellite receiver. Not only does it record your favorite shows but you can put every other media on it as well including photos, music and games.

For an actual portable satellite receiver you would need to check out DirecTV’s SatGo system. You can’t put it in your pocket as it comes with a 17″ screen but for camping and other forms of travelling it’s perfect. Makes for the perfect device on camping trips, days at the beach or having a tailgate party.

The first thing that you need to consider is about the location you are going to put your television. This location will play an important role in making your decision. If there are a lot of windows in your room that allow the sun comes in during the day, you can choose buying LCD TV since it can be very beneficial for reducing glare. On the other hand, if you are in the dark basement, an LCD TV may be too bright. Meanwhile, a plasma television does not have as bright of the screen and it will be a perfect choice for your basement. Besides, plasma TV also comes with better viewing angle so that you need to keep in mind if your couch is directly in front of TV.

The second thing that you should consider is about the true colors. It is known that LCD TV comes with brighter screen than plasma TV so that it makes the black looks a bit faded, while the plasma can give you a true black. Plasma TV is designed with a wider and more realistic range of colors.

The third thing that you need to consider when choosing between an LCD and plasma TV is about the refresh the rate. The refresh rate is the amount of time per second when the image is refreshed. The LCD TV mostly comes with a refresh rate of 60HZ so that it makes actions movie, video games, or sports seem a bit blurry. Therefore, manufacturers create the high end LCD TV with 120HZ refresh rate now. It is different with a plasma TV. The refresh rate of Plasma TV cannot be measured.

It’s one of the most frequent questions I get. Patients ask me all the time: Do I really need to wear sunscreen? And the answer is, “Yes, no matter who you are, where you live, where you work, you really need to wear sunscreen every day.” Why am I so determined to get everybody slathered with skin protection? Well, nobody is in a better position than a dermatologist to see the harsh effects of solar radiation on human skin.

Most people know that exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun can lead to skin cancer, especially in fair-skinned people with light eye and hair color. But it’s not only pale folks who are at risk: multiple sunburns, for any skin color or type, raise the risk of skin cancer. And sunscreen really can effectively prevent sunburn, if you use it right.

Short of cancer, though, years of sun exposure gradually change our skin in ways that make us look – well, old. Yes, sunlight can promote premature aging of the skin, accelerating natural aging processes, weakening collagen, and causing the elastic fibers in skin to uncoil like a worn-out bedspring. And then – well, you know the rest. Your skin sags. Gravity takes over, the skin can’t hold out, so down it comes.

Sun exposure also dries out skin and reduces its ability to hold moisture. The resulting lines and wrinkles sharpen the appearance of aging. And the cute, charming freckles that the sun brings out in childhood morph into the brown spots and discoloration that plague us as we get older.

So how can we use sunscreen to get the skin protection we need? First, be sure you get the right product. The worst sun damage comes from UVA rays. UVA has a longer wavelength, so it can penetrate deeper into the skin, causing the aging effects we associate with sun exposure. We now know that UVA exposure also blocks your skin’s natural repair mechanisms, so that previous damage and pre-cancers cannot be reversed. It’s UVA radiation that can give you a sunburn on a cloudy day – it travels right through the clouds. And it can go through the glass of your car windows, which is why we dermatologists see the most skin cancers on the head and neck, on the left. Look at the left side of your neck. Do you see brown spots? When you were 13, they didn’t have UVA protection. That’s the ray that’s aging you.

So I always urge my patients to make sure they have the right product, and to use it correctly. First, look for a bottle or tube of sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays (UVB is the one that causes burning between 10 am and 3 pm). More tips for effective sunscreen use:

Be sure you get a sunscreen with an SPF number of at least 30

Apply it liberally, about 15 to 20 minutes before sun exposure

Reapply every one to two hours, especially if you’re going into the water or perspiring a lot

Once you have the sunscreen part down, there’s more you can do to protect yourself from the sun:

Limit your sun exposure, especially during the high sun hours of 10 am to 3 pm

Seek shade can whenever possible

Find sun protective clothing – it offers effective protection while you’re outdoors

Throw away your sunscreen from last year and purchase new products

That last point needs some extra emphasis. Most people don’t realize that these old sunscreens chemically break down. Unless there’s an expiration date on the bottle, you can’t assume they’ll provide the label’s SPF protection for more than a year.

For the take-home message, I’d just like to elaborate on the advice of journalist Mary Schmich (she’s the one who really wrote the “Vonnegut speech”), and urge everybody to use sun protection that blocks both UVA and UVB to their exposed skin each and every day. In other words – “Wear sunscreen!”

One can only marvel at the way these two Dragon investors team up to grab some of the more lucrative investment proposals from under the noses of fellow Dragons Peter Jones, Theo Paphitis and Deborah Meaden.

It is this precise skill which has helped turn the Dragons’ Den TV series into compulsive viewing.

Although Duncan Bannatyne and James Caan are described as Investor Dragons, I feel certain they would be equally comfortable being described as dragon slayers.

Few successful business magnates like James Caan and Duncan Bannatyne get to achieve their outstanding success without possessing a dragon slayers mind-set.

One has only to witness some of the less than professional entrepreneurs pitching for investment from the Dragons’ Den (DD) to see the scathing attacks on their lack of business professionalism from both Duncan Bannatyne and James Caan.

On some occasions it often appears to be a competition for who can deliver the most effective verbal put down to the entrepreneurs pitching for investment.

For example Theo Paphitis often informs people pitching that he would rather stick pins in his eyes than risk his children’s inheritance on the entrepreneur.

Deborah Meaden offers entrepreneurs enough rope to either save themselves, or hang themselves. She dismisses pitch candidates with the upraised palm of her hand and a stinging remark like, “You have made yourself completely un-investable.”

Peter Jones quite often berates entrepreneurs who have attended their Dragons’ Den TV pitch while unsuitably dressed.

He has repeatedly remarked how incredible it is that people turn up asking the Dragons for hundreds of thousands of pounds investment, and yet they appear in casual clothes or even worse in jeans.

As the latest Dragon to enter the Dragons’ Den James Caan still appears quite dignified in his dismissal of entrepreneurs. Although his patience does seem to wear a bit thin when faced with an entrepreneur who has no real grasp of business, but is pitching for his money.

Perhaps it’s his gravely Scottish voice that seems to cut through aspiring entrepreneurs like a knife through butter. But when Duncan Bannatyne dismisses people, they know they’ve been dismissed.

Viewers will hardly forget when Duncan Bannatyne felt one pitch was such a waste of money that he picked up Theo Paphitis stack of cash notes, and marched up to the guy pitching and dumped the money in a bin he was promoting.

Business fans of the DD TV series will be watching the new eighth series of DD 2010 to see if any new dragon slayers get Duncan Bannatyne, James Caan, Peter Jones, Theo Paphitis or Deborah Meaden to part with their hard earned children’s inheritance.

As summer approaches, we often need reminders or new ideas to help protect our skin from harmful UV rays.

Choosing the Best UV Protection

While planning a beach vacation, we tend to have more important things on our minds than sun protection.

Whether people want to admit it or not, looking great at the beach takes some special planning. Not getting sunburned also takes some special planning. A lot of people tend to shy away from sunscreens because several of them are coloured. No one wants to go to the beach looking like a cartoon character! No worries, beach bums – there are plenty of sunscreens that rub in clear.

All sunscreens have a sun protection factor, or SPF, printed on the bottle or label. A minimum SPF of 15 blocks most of the sun’s harmful rays and helps prevent sunburn.

The minimum SPF does not offer maximum protection; some rays will still penetrate and may burn you. It is highly recommended that you use a sunscreen with an SPF of more than 15. Broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF of higher than 15 that also contain avobenzone, ecamsule, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are proven to be more effective against all of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.

Applying Sunscreen

If you read the label, you will likely see ‘generously apply’ -but what does that really mean?

Apply sunscreen in a similar fashion that you would apply lotion to very dry skin. Apply about one ounce of sunscreen to the legs. Follow up with about one ounce to the face, neck shoulders and arms. In all, an adult should probably use 2-3 ounces of sunscreen per application.

The initial application should take place about 30 minutes before entering the sun. This short wait allows your skin to absorb some of the protective chemicals. Reapply sunscreen about every 1.5-2 hours.

Even “water resistant” sunscreens often get washed away within an hour. Any time you dry your skin with a towel, reapply your sunscreen.

Other Sunscreen Options

Female beach-goers tend to feel their best when they can wear makeup. Even a hint of colour can help a woman feel her best.

Avoid lip glosses that do not offer SPF! Lip cancer is one of the most common forms of skin cancer. Using lip gloss without SPF helps pull more of the sun’s power to your lips. Many cosmetic companies now advertise SPF in not only lip glosses and lipsticks, but in other products as well. Facial creams can be a great way to ensure you have enough SPF to protect delicate facial skin as well as ears, neck and chest.

Clothing, Sunglasses and Hats

While you’re just relaxing in the sun, save the sunscreen and wear a light layer of clothing. Clothing will help protect your skin, but not as well as sunscreen.

A typical cotton t-shirt provides about the same protection as most SPF 15 sunscreens. Proper summertime clothing can also help keep you cooler. Darker colored clothing can provide more protection from the sun than light colors.

Many companies are creating sun-protective garments that help protect against the sun’s rays. Detergent companies are joining the battle and creating laundry detergents that add polymers to clothing that will help block UV rays.

Wide brimmed hats are an excellent addition to the summer wardrobe. Hats help protect the forehead, nose and ears from sunburn. The hat doesn’t have to be huge. Just 2-3 inches will help protect delicate skin from a painful burn. Baseball caps can help protect the face, but not the neck or ears. Tightly woven straw hats can help protect and shade you from the sun’s glare.

Sunglasses are a very important factor to any summertime wardrobe. Dark sunglasses aren’t enough. To effectively deter UV rays, glasses must have a special chemical coating. Look for sunglasses with an ANSI label. The sun’s rays can still penetrate darker plastics. Don’t forget children’s sensitive eyes as well. Children need the same eye protection as adults.

Avoid Alcohol

Drinking alcohol can lead to more severe sunburn.

Alcoholic beverages tend to dehydrate the skin, making it more susceptible to sunburn. Excessive alcohol consumption tends to make sun-lovers less aware of the amount of time they have spent in the sun and increases the chance of sunburn.

Sun damage is a form of extrinsic aging, which is early aging that is caused by the surrounding. Extrinsic aging is collective, means that effects exacerbate with repeating, unprotected contact to the sun. Skin is a complex entity consisting of cells and tissues that form the outer surface of the body. It can suffer from environmental insults, including temperature, humidity and solar energy. Changes in the skin are perceived as aging. This phenomenon is not simply a result of chronological aging but a reflection of the consequences of excessive ultraviolet exposure from the sun’s rays.

Sun damage occurs both indoor and out and at any time of the day, regardless if it is sunny or cloudy. During spring even casual exposure can cause UV damage. Melanin transforms UV-photons quickly into harmless amount of heat generating free radicals and is therefore an excellent photoprotectant against direct and indirect DNA damages.

Although the sun is necessary for life, sun damage to skin is caused by the invisible and intense ultraviolet radiation of sun exposure. Some of those harmful effects are visible right away like suntan and sunburn but others appear and worsen overtime such as liver spots and wrinkles. With repeated intense sun exposure the skin damage can even progress into cancer.

Sun damage prevention

1) Protect yourself against sun damage: protect yourself against daily sun damage by applying sun protection prior to every time you are going to e in direct or indirect contact with the sun. Sun protection ought to be applied to the face, ears, lips and neck. Do not forget to protect your scalp if you have bald spots or your hair is thinning. For extended and intentional exposure when you are working, exercising or relaxing outdoors, sun protection should be reapplied every 2 to 3 hours.

2) Fully cover your body: In order to minimize sun exposure, you should search for shade on every possible occasion. Firmly woven, loose fitting, full-length clothing and wide brimmed hat can offer additional protection. To help avoid damage to your eyes, sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UV rays should be worn.

3) Try to avoid sun between 11am to 4pm: UV rays are strongest between 11am to 4pm. Try to avoid the sun during these hours.

4) Oppose the temptation: Refuse to give in to the desire to tan outdoors in natural light or indoors under artificial UV light. UV rays enter the inner layer of the skin. In reply, the body produces additional melanin. That causes the skin obviously to be darker. A tan is proof that UV has damaged some of the skin’s cell. It has been verified that a tan is not healthy or safe.

Some clothing and swimsuits manufacturers now produce a protective clothing line with a UPF or ultraviolet protection factor. Designed for those who spend a lot of time outdoors such as surfers, sailors, golfers, hikers, fishers, and others, these clothes are stylish and functional. You’ll find protective clothing for all members of the family, including infants. Even if you can’t find or afford clothing with UPF, tightly woven fabrics and dark colors are effective at blocking out the sun’s harmful rays. And dry clothing blocks out more UV rays than do wet. Of course, long sleeves and pants offer maximum sun protection, but who wants to wear that much clothing when out in the sun? make sure you ask for UPF50+ ratings when purchasing UV protective clothing.

Hats protect hair, eyes, face and the tips of ears. Wide brims offer the most protection and will actually help cool you off. Legionnaire caps (with long back flap) provide good sun protection for the back neck. Sunglasses are an absolute must when outdoors. When selecting a pair, make sure the label specifically states that the lenses offer UV protection otherwise they’ll be useless. As a general rule, the bigger the lens, the more sun protection. Wrap-around styles offer the most protection because they block sun radiation that can hit the eyes from the sides. And they’re trendy too!

Sun burns are skin damages. They damage the outer layer of the skin which can lead to serious complications later on. So, avoid getting sun burns.
Apply sun block to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB. Use a block with a SPF or Sun Protection Factor of at least 15, but preferably greater. Put the lotion on about 20 to 30 minutes before going outside so that the skin can absorb it properly. After swimming and toweling off or excessive sweating, reapply the sunscreen. Choose the right sun block for your skin. A person who perspires a lot because of sports related activities should apply a sun block formulated for these activities only whereas the swimmers can use water resistant sun block.
10:00AM to 3:00PM is the period of the day when the sun is hottest. So, avoid going out in the sun in this period.
If your skin is very sensitive get a hypoallergenic sun block for yourself.
Wear clothes that cover your body properly while spending a great deal of time outdoor. Protect your eyes by wearing dark sunglasses. Wear a hat to protect your face from sun burns.
Don’t forget your lips. Your lips have skin on them which can get sun burnt or becomes chapped. Both ways it will look ugly. So, use a lip moisturizer with sun protection factor for your lips.
Chances of getting a sun tan get magnified in water. So, spend as little time as possible in water. Use a sun block each time you dive into the water.
Extra precaution has to be taken by people with fair skin, moles, and freckles or with history of sun tanning badly. Children under sixteen years of age with family history of skin cancer should avoid sun exposure.

Some precatory words for those who enjoy sun tanning and like the sun tanned look.

The sun’s ultraviolet rays are the most threatening component of a natural sun tan. So, if you start your skin tanning routine during summer then limit your exposure to sun to 15 minutes initially. Increase the time limit as your skin starts getting adjusted to the heat gradually. Do not stay outside for more than two hours at a time.
Get a sun protection lotion with SPF less than 15 but more than 7. It will provide required minimum protection to your skin. Moisturize your skin with after sun lotion.
Those with fair skin are more prone to sun burn than the dark skinned. So, they should avoid sun exposure during the peak hours.
Remember to wear sunglasses while tanning to protect your eyes from the scorching rays of noon sun.
Scrub your body with a loofah pad and get rid of the dead skin before applying the tanning lotion. Test it on a small area of your body for adverse reactions before applying the tanning lotion all over your body. Apply the lotion with slow and deliberate strokes to the back of your knees, elbows, ankles and tan lines. Wipe away extra lotion to get an even bronzed look. Wash hands or gloves thoroughly with soap and water after applying sun tanning lotion and wait at least 15 minutes before getting your skin wet.
